Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS)
The UK Government introduced the Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) to implement Article 8 (4 to 6) of the EU Energy Efficiency Directive (2021/27/EU).
ESOS is a mandatory energy assessment scheme for organisations in the UK that meet the qualification criteria. Those that qualify, must carry out ESOS assessments every four years. These assessments require you to audit the total energy consumption of your buildings, industrial processes and transport to improve energy efficiency – and reduce costs.
Who is obligated?
Your organisation qualifies for ESOS if it:
- Employs 250 or more people, or
- Has an annual turnover in excess of £44m and an annual balance sheet total in excess of £38m, or
- Is an overseas company with a UK registered establishment which has 250 or more UK employees (paying income tax in the UK)
For more information about how to assess if you qualify, read the full guidance on complying with ESOS on the gov.uk website.
Compliance periods and compliance dates
If you qualify for ESOS, you must notify the Environment Agency that you have complied with the obligations by the last date of each compliance period (‘the compliance date’). Whether you qualify or not is based on the status of your organisation on the relevant qualification date. The next key date in the diary is 31st December 2022. If your company meets the conditions for ESOS on that date, you must comply. A breakdown of future compliance periods is as follows:
